Located in El Matorral, just five kilometres from the island capital of Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura Airport plays a key role in tourism development on the island.

Most of the flights from the airport are to European Union countries. Germany and the United Kingdom represent 79 per cent of the international traffic. Domestic traffic centres around three destinations: Gran Canaria, Madrid - Barajas and Tenerife Norte.

In 2005, the airport received 4,071,875 passengers on the 40,415 flight operations handled. 3,179 tonnes of cargo were transported.

The airport can be reached on the FV-1 highway, by means of a fork in the road leading to a roundabout situated at the airport limits.

Bus: Bus route 3 runs from the airport to Puerto del Rosario every hour 0745-2045 and to Caleta Fuste every hour 0715-2015; route 1 runs from Puerto del Rosario to Morro Jable 0700-1900 Monday-Saturday and 0900-1900 Sunday. It also runs from Morro Jable to Puerto del Rosario 0600-1900 Monday-Saturday and 0800-1900 Sunday; route 6 runs from Puerto del Rosario to Corralejo every hour 0700-2100 and from Corralejo to Puerto del Rosario every hour 0700-2000. Disabled Facilities at Fuerteventura Airport:
Since 1 December 2000, Fuerteventura airport has the International Accessibility Symbol for the terminal, car park and accesses, granted by the Department of Employment and Social Affairs at the Canary Island Government.

This certificate guarantees that the airport facilities meet the measures included in the Regulations of the 8/1995 Act of 6 April, which controls Accessibility and the Supression of Physical and Communication Barriers. Fuerteventura airport was the first Spanish airport and the first building in the Canary Islands to obtain this recognition.

The main action taken to obtain this Symbol were:

  • Signalling on glass doors and panels with red stripes 5 centimetres wide, this being the colour best perceived by the visually impaired.
  • Arm supports on the toilets in the passenger terminal for better incorporation of disabled users.
  • Sciatic supports next to the groups of seats.
  • Emergency intercoms connected to the safety control centre in toilets and lifts and sound signals in the latter.
  • Open and close bars on the toilet doors for the disabled in order to make access easier for travellers in wheelchairs.
  • Text telephones in the terminal with keyboards and visual screen for people with hearing problems.
  • Handrails on the ramps for better accessibility by the disabled.
  • Signalling on the edges of steps in yellow for the visually impaired.
  • Installing of special warning paving strips in front of doors, stairways and lifts.
  • Construction of transverse depressions with non-slip tiles in a different texture to the pavement with two bands of red tiles, 1 metre wide, as signalled paving.
  • Installation of parking spaces for the disabled with horizontal and vertical signalling.
