Malaga airport is located 8 km from the city centre with excellent connections to whole of the Costa del Sol. It is one of the oldest Spanish airports as well as being one of the original locations of the first airline founded in Spain in 1919.
Most of the traffic handled by the airport is from the European Union. London-Gatwick is the destination with the greatest number of passengers, followed by Manchester, London-Luton, Dublin, Brussels and Amsterdam.
Malaga airport also has scheduled flights to the rest of Spain, most significantly to Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca and Melilla.
Malaga airport is undergoing a major infrastructure modernisation process, both in the terminal area and on the airfield, as part of "Plan Malaga".
In 2005, it handled 12,669,019 passengers, 123,959 flight operations and 5,493 tonnes of cargo.

Public Transport from Malaga Airport:
By Rail: There are local trains to Málaga and Fuengirola. The train station is located opposite Terminal 2. By Road: Taxi: Taxis are available outside the terminals. Taxi ranks are located outside Terminal 1 Arrivals and Terminal 2 Departures. Bus: Tourist shuttle buses and public bus service run to Málaga and can be caught outside Terminal 1 Arrivals and Terminal 2 Departures. There is also a bus service to Marbella that operates daily from both terminals.

Airport information desks (tel: (0)95 204 8804) can be found in Arrivals at both terminals and in Departures in Terminal 2. The multi-lingual staff wear mint green jackets for easy identification. Airlines also have information desks in both Arrivals and Departures.
Airport Facilities at Malaga Airport:
Money and communications: There is a bank in Arrivals in Terminal 2, as well as several ATMs and post boxes. Bureaux de change are available at the bank, in the baggage reclaim halls in both terminals, and in the Terminal 2 Departures lounge. Eating and drinking: There are bars, restaurants and fast-food outlets, which can be found in the Centro Plaza in Terminal 1. Bars and cafés are also available in the Centro Comercial in Departures on the second floor of Terminal 2. Shopping: A variety of shops, including a pharmacy, can be found in the Central Plaza in Terminal 1. Many more shops, including duty-free, are available in the Centro Comercial in Departures on the second floor of Terminal 2. Luggage: There is no left-luggage facility at the airport. There is a lost property office in Terminal 1. Other facilities: There is a medical service, pharmacy, oratory, and exhibition area, as well as travel agencies.
