Malta International Airport has been open for commercial traffic for over 50 years. The present air terminal building was constructed during the period 1989/91 and was officially opened on the 7th February 1992. The building has been designed to handle 5 million passengers annually and is equipped with the facilities expected of a modern international air terminal.

Malta International Airport boasts of state-of-the-art equipment such as a 100% Hold Baggage Screening system capable of processing 1,500 luggage pieces per hour and an ARINC MUSE common check-in system together with a Baggage Reconciliation System.

The terminal complex comprises of split level Departure and Arrival Halls at either side of the main building with spacious Check-In, Baggage Reclaim and Welcomers' Halls, cafeterias, restaurants, tax free shops and other retail outlets, offices, stores and other service areas. For the business travelers, the airport has three executive lounges as well as a separate, exclusive VVIP building for Heads of States and diplomats.

The terminal complex also comprises a road and pavement network extending approximately 40,000 sq metres and a main car park, coaches’ park, a car-hire park and a taxi park extending approximately 50,000 sq metres.

Driving Directions from Malta Airport:
On leaving the airport, take the main road to Marsa, which leads to Valletta. The city center and airport are both clearly signposted.

Car Parking at Malta Airport:
The main car park at Malta International Airport is linked to the main terminal building by a walkway. The car park has a capacity for 650 vehicles and is operated by Sterling Parks.

Car Hire at Malta Airport:
Companies include Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, National, Sixt and Thrifty and are located in the Welcomers’ Hall.

Public Transport at Malta Airport:
By Road: Taxi: There is a fixed-fare taxi service to all areas of Malta. A taxi booth is located in the Welcomers’ Hall, where pre-paid tickets can be purchased. Bus: Bus no.8 departs regularly to/from Valletta and leaves from a bus stop outside the check-in hall. See www.maltairport.com

Information and Help Desks at Malta Airport:
Malta Tourist Information (tel: 2369 6073/4) is located in the Welcomers’ Hall and is open 24 hours a day. Additional information is available online (see www.visitmalta.com). The Customer Services Centre (tel: 2124 9600) is located inside the check-in hall and is also open around the clock.

Communication Services at Malta Airport:
Telecommunications: Maltacom plc, Malta's fixed telephone service provider, have an automated outlet inside the Check-in Hall.  All types of pre-paid telephone cards are available 24 hours a day. A number of public phone booths are available at all areas of the air terminal, both coin-operated and by use of pre-paid cards.
Mobile communications: Malta has two service providers for mobile communications - Vodafone and Go Mobile. Both have local and roaming connectivity within the air terminal.  Pre-paid cards are available from leading outlets. 
Wireless Communications:
All areas of the air terminal are covered to communicate with the Wi-Fi technology.  Pre-paid cards are available from the Maltacom and Maltapost outlets as well as other outlets within the air terminal.
Internet Access: Three public internet-access kiosks with a number of stations each are available inside the Check-in Hall (at the FliteBite cafeteria), the Welcomers' Hall (at the Connections cafeteria) and inside the Departure Lounge (opposite Gate 6). Pre-paid cards can be bought from the cafeterias where the kiosks are situated or the newsagent outlet inside the Departure Lounge.
Postal Services: Maltapost plc have an office inside the Check-in Hall, open daily from 07.00 hrs till 15.00hrs.  Postage stamps may be purchased after office hours through automated machines situated near the office.

Airport Facilities at Malta Airport:
Money and communications: There are two banks, Bank of Valletta and HSBC botgh located in the Welcomers’ Hall and both with ATM facilities. Eating and drinking: There are several cafes and restaurants in the airport including fast food outlets. Shopping: There is a good selection of shops including duty free, news agents, craft shops, gift shop and a fashion outlets.

Disabled Facilities at Malta Airport:
Malta International Airport offers a number of services and is equipped to facilitate movement for persons with special needs.

  • Wheelchairs: Wheelchairs need to be booked beforehand and are provided free of charge.  Bookings can be made through the airline or your tour operator.  Unaccompanied people will be provided assistance.
  • Access to aircraft: Both passenger handling service providers are equipped with lifters for direct access to aircraft
  • Facilities: Low telephones in all areas of the air terminal
  • Lifts and escalators to reach all floors of the air terminal
  • Dedicated washrooms in all areas of the air terminal
  • Dedicated car park spaces in the main car ark
